The Pungko-pungko Experience

I've tasted Dumaguete's McDoco-doco and Bacolod's meaty sisig, but Cebu's pungko-pungko is definitely a stand out. If you are a true born cebuano then you surely have eaten at or at least have heard of pungko-pungko. I'm not really from cebu since I only came here to work but the thrill to get to such place really had gotten into me. I heard of it during my first week here and I was so excited to taste and experience it as many of my friends here described it as a very lumpiest meal to feast on.

Pungko-pungko is usually found near the busy highways of the city or in front of big government offices or schools. The term had originated from it's native meaning of to squat or basically, squatting! No utensils are used and everything is in a clear small plastic bag. You put your hand inside a plastic bag and then start picking on your fave pungko-pungko specialties and of course paired by puso, it's a native rice cooked inside a stuffed circled baskets made of coconut leaves. Then of course the side dishes like a small bowl of suka (vinegar) with sliced fresh bumbay (onions) and sili (red chili) would make the table a perfect pungko-pungko experience.

So what's so tasty about it? The popularity isn't just all about how you eat there but most of all it's the type of food that you are going to eat! The common pungko-pungko stand would contain the ff, ngohiong (a kind of Chinese spring roll stuffed with exotic meat), lumpia (a regular Chinese spring roll usually stuffed with mungo beans), dila (pork tongue), bola-bolalonganisa (a Filipino-style smoked sausage), nokos (dried squid or cuttlefish), tongol (pig tripe), buwad (dried fish), tinai sa baboy (pork intestine) and of course everyone’s favorite bulaklak or ginabot (deep-fried fat-laden pork omentum). And the good thing is you can get them for at least 6php-10php per piece and puso for 2php each. (meatballs),

I only had two pungko-pungko experience so far, both from the stands near Iglesia ni Cristo along mango avenue. I can't really make it a daily or even a weekly habit as the risks of getting unlikely diseases from such food are terminally high. But once you try it, you'd really forget about those threatening stuffs. It was all worth the try! **Lance**
